Berthoud began the harvest of sugar beets in October 1941. Berthoud was the location where beets could be harvested for processing in Loveland (Colorado) to the north. According to Berthoud’s historical society, Berthoud farmers delivered the beets from the region to various rural dump stations.
The beets then were transported by boxcars to nearby sugar factories Loveland or Longmont. This industry was dependent on both WWII German Prisoners of War and migrant farm workers hailing from Mexico.
