Camp Wardwell, located along the Overland Trail in 1865 was created to provide protection for emigrants as well as supplies traveling to Denver and other mining areas. General John Pope renamed the fort in 1866 to honor Colonel Christopher A. Morgan (who had already died that year). After being used for about 1,300 soldiers by 19 companies, the fort was closed down in 1868.
Fort Morgan, which is located just south of the ruins of an old military fort, was laid out by Abner Baker (a Greeley’s Union Colony member). On February 19, 1889, the town was made the county seat for the newly created Morgan County.
A military school was established at Fort Morgan State Armory as part of the West Coast Air Corps Training Center during World War II.

Morgan County was created in Colorado from a part of Weld County. Fort Morgan is the county seat. Morgan County, which is primarily a rural county, lies on the northeastern Colorado high plains. It borders Washington County and Logan Counties, Adams County, Weld County, and Weld County.
